Trouble Mounts for Abhishek Banerjee as KMC Scrutinises Properties Linked to TMC Leader

Fresh political controversy has erupted in West Bengal after the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) reportedly issued notices to several properties linked to TMC National General Secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee, seeking documents related to approved building plans and construction clearances.

The development comes shortly after the BJP assumed power in West Bengal, ending the TMC’s long rule in the state. According to reports citing civic sources, notices have been served to nearly 17 to 21 properties allegedly associated with Banerjee, his family members, and the company Leaps and Bounds. Authorities are reportedly examining whether these properties comply with sanctioned civic plans and regulations.

State Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul said that no individual is above the law and claimed that authorities had identified several allegedly illegal constructions linked to TMC leaders. Referring to the notices, she warned that legal action could follow if required documents are not submitted.

The properties under scrutiny reportedly include Banerjee’s residence on Harish Mukherjee Road in Kolkata, along with multiple other premises in areas such as Kalighat, Panditiya Road, and Ustad Aamir Khan Sarani.

Responding to the controversy, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said he was unaware of the notices, adding that policymakers in the civic body do not directly oversee such procedural matters.

According to civic officials, the notices have reportedly been issued under Section 400(1) of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation Act, 1980, which allows authorities to seek explanations regarding alleged unauthorised construction. Property owners have been asked to submit approved plans and relevant documents or clarify whether permissions were obtained for structural modifications.

Officials said the submitted records would be reviewed to determine if any deviation from approved plans or civic norms had occurred. Failure to respond satisfactorily could reportedly lead to demolition proceedings in accordance with the law.
