Sunetra Pawar Emerges as Strong Contender in Baramati By-Election

Vote counting is currently in progress for by-elections held across seven constituencies in India, spanning states such as Karnataka, Maharashtra, Nagaland, Tripura, and Gujarat. These bypolls were necessitated following the demise of sitting legislators last month.

The constituencies where results are being declared include Bagalkot and Davanagere South in Karnataka, Baramati and Rahuri in Maharashtra, Koridang in Nagaland, Dharmanagar in Tripura, and Umreth in Gujarat. Meanwhile, the by-election in Ponda, Goa, has been declared “invalid” by the Bombay High Court.

Among all seats, Maharashtra’s Baramati constituency has drawn significant attention. The bypoll was triggered by the untimely death of former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash on January 28. Representing the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), his wife Sunetra Pawar has entered the fray as the party’s candidate.

Early trends and political signals suggest that Sunetra Pawar holds a strong position in Baramati, a constituency long associated with the Pawar family’s political legacy. Her candidacy has garnered considerable support, both from party workers and local voters, positioning her as a leading contender in this high-profile by-election.

As counting progresses, all eyes remain on Baramati and other key constituencies, with results expected to influence regional political dynamics in the coming months.
