US Launches ‘Project Freedom’ to Secure Ships in Strait of Hormuz

The United States has announced the launch of “Project Freedom,” a large-scale operation to evacuate commercial ships stranded in the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz. The initiative, unveiled by former US President Donald Trump, is set to begin on May 4.

According to the announcement, the mission will focus on safely escorting vessels belonging to neutral countries that are not directly involved in the ongoing Middle East conflict. Trump described these ships as “innocent bystanders” caught in escalating regional tensions and emphasized that the operation is humanitarian in nature.

The US military’s United States Central Command (CENTCOM) will lead the mission, deploying a formidable force that includes around 15,000 troops, guided-missile destroyers, more than 100 aircraft (both land- and sea-based), and drones. Admiral Brad Cooper stated that the operation is defensive and essential for maintaining regional security and stabilizing global trade routes.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most vital maritime corridors, handling nearly a quarter of global seaborne oil shipments. Due to rising tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the US, several commercial vessels have been stranded, raising concerns about disruptions in oil supply and global economic stability.

CENTCOM clarified that while the mission involves heavy military presence, it is not officially categorized as a military escort operation. Instead, it combines diplomatic coordination with strategic defense measures under what has been termed a “maritime freedom construct.”

Despite a temporary ceasefire with Iran, tensions remain high. The US has warned that any interference with the mission will be met with strict action. Analysts see Project Freedom as part of a dual strategy—balancing diplomatic engagement with strong military preparedness.

The outcome of this mission is expected to have significant implications for global oil markets and regional stability, as the world watches closely.
