Rahul Gandhi's 'Students, Idiots and Andhbhakts' Remark Triggers Uproar in Lok Sabha

A heated debate in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday took an unexpected turn when Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi made a controversial remark categorising people into three groups—"students, idiots, and andhbhakts"—triggering strong protests from BJP members and widespread reactions on social media.

During the debate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, Gandhi said he had recently spoken to a student who described people in three categories: those who are willing to learn, those who believe they know everything, and "andhbhakts" or blind followers. While narrating the conversation, Gandhi used the term "idiots", leading to immediate objections from the Treasury benches.

BJP MPs condemned the language as unparliamentary and offensive, arguing that such remarks were inappropriate for the floor of the House. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised Gandhi's comments, saying that regardless of whether he was quoting someone else, he had chosen to use the words in Parliament.

As protests intensified, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla directed that the contentious remarks be expunged from the official parliamentary records.

The comments quickly went viral on social media, where clips of Gandhi's speech were widely shared, sparking both criticism and humour.
