PM Modi Predicts ‘Imminent Change’ in Bengal, Criticises TMC at Kolkata Rally

New Delhi,March 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday addressed a large political rally in Kolkata, asserting that political change in West Bengal is “imminent” and sharply criticising the ruling Trinamool Congress government.

Speaking at the Brigade Parade Ground, Modi began his speech in Bengali, greeting the crowd and emphasising the cultural pride of the state. He said the massive turnout at the rally reflected the public mood and suggested that people were ready for a shift in leadership.

“The huge crowd gathered here today shows what Bengal is thinking,” Modi said, adding that the current state government was “confused and worried” as the prospect of political change grows stronger.

Taking aim at the government led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Prime Minister alleged that the state administration had failed to ensure development and transparency. He accused the ruling party of blocking several central government welfare schemes and hindering progress in the state.

Modi claimed that successive governments — including those led by the Congress, the Left, and now the TMC — had prioritised political interests over development in Bengal. According to him, this had slowed the state’s growth and affected opportunities for its people.

He also framed the upcoming assembly elections as a crucial moment for the future of the state. “This election is not just about changing a government; it is about safeguarding the spirit and future of Bengal,” he said.

The Prime Minister further assured that law and order would be strengthened and that individuals accused of wrongdoing would face action if a new government comes to power.

Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress has repeatedly criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party, accusing it of being a party of “outsiders” and attempting to undermine Bengal’s cultural identity — an issue that has increasingly shaped the political discourse in the state.

Earlier in the day, Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for several development projects worth ₹18,680 crore in West Bengal. Among them was the Kharagpur–Moregram Expressway project, which the Prime Minister said would boost connectivity and accelerate economic activity across the state and eastern India.

With assembly elections expected in April–May, political campaigning in Bengal has intensified, with both the BJP and the TMC sharpening their attacks as the state prepares for a closely watched electoral contest.
