‘My Mother Gave Birth to a Lion, Not a Jackal’: UP Constable Alleges Corruption, Challenges Police Officials

A series of viral videos released by Sunil Kumar Shukla, a constable posted in the reserve police lines of the Lucknow Commissionerate, has triggered a major controversy within the Uttar Pradesh Police. In the videos, the constable openly accused officials of corruption, extortion, and mental harassment while directly appealing to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for justice.

The controversy intensified after another emotional video surfaced online in which Shukla challenged his seniors, saying, “My mother gave birth to a lion, not a jackal,” while alleging that authorities were trying to intimidate him after he exposed corruption within the department.

According to Shukla, police personnel raided his homes in Raebareli and Amethi late at night following his allegations. Questioning the action, he asked whether he was being treated like a terrorist, extremist, murderer, or hardened criminal.

In the video, Shukla claimed that around six to seven policemen arrived at his home around 1 am while only his elderly mother and sister were present. He alleged that the raids were aimed at mentally pressuring and intimidating his family. Referring to his father’s death and his mother’s poor health, he said the family was already going through emotional hardship.

The constable further alleged large-scale corruption inside the reserve police lines. He claimed that police personnel were forced to pay money every month in exchange for favourable duty assignments and postings. According to him, around ₹2,000 was allegedly collected from each constable and staff member through guard commanders, with the money supposedly reaching higher officials.

Shukla alleged that nearly 400 police personnel were being subjected to this collection system, resulting in an estimated ₹8 lakh being gathered every month. He also mentioned a system allegedly called “Chadhna D” through which duty and guard arrangements were managed. However, these allegations have not yet been independently verified.

During the videos, Shukla appeared emotional several times and said he considered freedom fighter Bhagat Singh as his inspiration. He stated that he would continue raising his voice against injustice and corruption, even if he faced consequences.

He clarified that he had no personal enmity with any officer but believed it was necessary to expose irregularities within the department. Shukla also urged the Uttar Pradesh government to introduce reforms in the police force similar to those implemented in other government sectors.

The viral videos have once again sparked debate over working conditions, pressure, and alleged corruption within the police system. In the past too, several police personnel in Uttar Pradesh have raised concerns regarding excessive duty hours, lack of leave, administrative pressure, and treatment by senior officers.

So far, there has been no official detailed response from the police department regarding the allegations made in the videos.
