Mamata Banerjee Claims Message Sought Abhishek’s Removal, Slams Expelled TMC MLAs
Former West Bengal Chief Minister rejects alleged condition for leaders’ return, criticizes expelled legislators, and questions police denial of protest permission.
A fresh political controversy emerged in West Bengal on Monday after former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee claimed that she had received a message suggesting that certain leaders would return to the party only if Abhishek Banerjee was removed from his organizational role. Addressing party workers and supporters virtually, Mamata firmly rejected the alleged condition, asserting that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) would not bow to external pressure.
Speaking during the virtual address, Mamata said that people without ideology or principles could not dictate terms to the party. She emphasized that the TMC does not take decisions under pressure and remains committed to its organizational values.
The remarks come amid growing political turbulence within the party, following the expulsion of two TMC MLAs over alleged anti-party activities. Expressing displeasure with the expelled leaders, Mamata directly criticized Ritabrata Banerjee, recalling that he had been given an opportunity within the TMC after being expelled from CPI(M) in 2017.
According to Mamata, other party members had sacrificed opportunities to make room for him, but he eventually betrayed the trust of the party and the people. She remarked that the departure of such individuals would ultimately strengthen the organization, adding that some leaders enjoyed power and positions for years before switching loyalties for personal interests.
In another development, an important meeting of TMC legislators scheduled at Mamata Banerjee’s residence had to be cancelled after only 20 out of 80 invited MLAs reportedly attended. Mamata alleged that opposition forces were using the police to intimidate legislators and pressure local representatives into resigning.
She also criticized the denial of permission for a proposed protest in Kolkata on June 2. According to Mamata, the party had informed the police in advance about the demonstration. She argued that if authorities had objections to the proposed venue, an alternative location could have been suggested instead of imposing restrictions at the last moment. The protest, she said, was planned in response to recent alleged attacks on TMC leaders. Mamata claimed that the party’s National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and MP Kalyan Banerjee had been deliberately targeted, accusing opponents of attempting to weaken and intimidate the opposition.
The developments signal rising tensions within the TMC at a politically sensitive time, with internal dissent and allegations of political pressure adding to the challenges facing the party in West Bengal.
