Maharashtra By-Elections: Contest Heats Up in Baramati Despite Congress Withdrawal

New Delhi | April 10, 2026

Despite the withdrawal of its candidate, the Indian National Congress will not see an uncontested field in the Baramati by-election, as a total of 23 candidates remain in the fray, challenging Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar.

The Baramati contest continues to draw attention due to the presence of several notable independent candidates, including Karuna Munde Sharma and reality TV personality Abhijit Bichukale, known for his appearance on Bigg Boss. Their participation adds an interesting dynamic to an already closely watched electoral battle.

Meanwhile, the Rahuri Assembly by-election is also witnessing a competitive race, with seven candidates contesting for the seat. Both constituencies are set to go to polls on April 23, while the counting of votes will take place on May 4.

The by-elections in Maharashtra are being closely monitored as they are expected to provide key political signals ahead of future electoral battles in the state, particularly for parties like the Nationalist Congress Party and other regional players.
