Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Reviews MCD Operations, Announces Major Push on Waste Management and Urban Cleanliness
Plans for waste-to-energy plants, toilet redevelopment, and stricter enforcement of sanitation norms
New Delhi | April 9, 2026: A high-level review meeting on the functioning of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was held under the leadership of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, with a strong focus on improving waste management and sanitation across the capital.
During the meeting, strict directions were issued to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi to enhance cleanliness standards and ensure efficient garbage disposal systems.
Key decisions taken during the meeting include:
Establishment of advanced waste-to-energy plants equipped with modern technology in Ghazipur, Narela, Okhla, and Tehkhand.
Redevelopment of nearly 1,000 public toilet and urinal blocks managed by the MCD.
Launch of three new biogas plants in Goyla Dairy, Ghogha, and Ghazipur to promote sustainable waste processing.
Implementation of a strict strategy to ensure effective collection of increased fines imposed on those found littering.
Directions to coordinate with the Delhi Development Authority to maintain regular and systematic cleanliness in markets across the city.
Strengthening of special drives for waste removal along railway tracks with improved frequency and monitoring.
Ensuring quality in road construction and repair works by assigning responsibilities to experienced companies to maintain accountability.
Officials have also been instructed to closely monitor all projects and ensure timely completion within defined deadlines.
The meeting was attended by key officials including Delhi Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh, Standing Committee Chairperson Satya Sharma, Leader of the House Pravesh Wahi, Chief Secretary Rajiv Verma, and Municipal Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar, along with other senior officials.
The initiative is seen as part of a broader push toward building a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment in the national capital.
