Congress Names VD Satheesan as New Kerala Chief Minister After Assembly Election Victory
Party leadership backs Satheesan’s strong public image and grassroots support over other contenders for the top post.
After days of intense speculation following the Kerala Assembly election results, the Indian National Congress has officially announced V. D. Satheesan as the new Chief Minister of Kerala.
The decision comes after the Congress secured victory in the state assembly elections, ending weeks of discussions over who would lead the new government.
VD Satheesan, who was appointed as the Leader of Opposition in Kerala in 2021, remained one of the most prominent faces of the Congress in the state over the last few years. Despite being in the opposition, he consistently raised public issues and maintained a strong connect with voters, which significantly boosted his popularity.
According to party sources, several Congress MLAs had reportedly supported K. C. Venugopal for the chief ministerial post. However, the party leadership ultimately chose Satheesan, giving priority to public sentiment, organizational feedback, and his role in the party’s electoral success.
Political observers believe Satheesan’s clean image, leadership during the election campaign, and strong grassroots support among party workers played a major role in the final decision. His ability to connect with ordinary people and aggressively take up issues against the previous government helped strengthen the Congress campaign across the state.
With Satheesan now set to take charge as Chief Minister, the Congress hopes to begin a new political chapter in Kerala under his leadership.
