Akhilesh Yadav Backs SP MP Iqra Hasan After Clash With Police in Saharanpur, Questions ‘What Was Her Crime?’
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP government of “authoritarianism” after SP MP Iqra Hasan allegedly faced detention during a protest seeking justice in a murder case.
A political controversy erupted in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur after Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Iqra Hasan got into a heated exchange with police officials during a protest over a murder case. The incident prompted strong reactions from SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, who came out in support of the MP and questioned the action taken against her.
The controversy began when Iqra Hasan visited Saharanpur to demand a fair investigation into the alleged murder of a local woman’s son in Jasala village. Hasan had accompanied the grieving mother to meet senior police officials, including the Deputy Inspector General (DIG), seeking justice and an impartial probe.
According to Hasan, despite hearing their concerns, authorities allegedly failed to address the victim’s demands. She further claimed that police later detained her and her associates for a brief period after accusing them of causing traffic disruption near the DIG office.
The situation intensified after SP leaders, including former minister Mangeram Kashyap and several party workers, were reportedly detained on charges related to breach of peace. In response, Hasan staged a sit-in protest outside the Sadar Bazaar police station, demanding their immediate release.
During the protest, Hasan reportedly told police officials, “Either arrest me too or release our people,” leading to a sharp verbal exchange between her and senior officers.
Reacting to the incident, Akhilesh Yadav took to social media platform X and criticized the BJP government. He questioned what “crime” the SP MP had committed, stating that she was merely helping a mother seeking justice after losing her son.
Calling the incident an example of injustice and misuse of power, Akhilesh accused the BJP-led government of suppressing voices demanding justice. He also warned that the PDA (Pichhda, Dalit, Alpsankhyak) alliance would not tolerate such actions.
Meanwhile, the protest continued late into the evening amid heavy police deployment and the presence of SP supporters, further intensifying the political atmosphere in the region.
