New Delhi: The Government has reported six incidents of theft involving antiquities from Monuments of National Importance, with recoveries successfully made in four of the cases, according to official information. First Information Reports (FIRs) were lodged in all instances, and authorities confirmed that none of the stolen items have been traced to foreign destinations. Notably, no valuation of the recovered or stolen antiquities has been conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage, the Government stated that multiple preventive measures are in place to curb illicit trafficking of antiquities. In addition to regular watch and ward personnel, Private Security Guards and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) have been deployed at monuments, archaeological sites, and museums based on security requirements. Officials emphasized that whenever a theft is reported, immediate legal and enforcement actions are initiated. These include the registration of FIRs and the issuance of Look Out Notices to law enforcement agencies, including Customs Exit Channels, to prevent illegal export and assist in tracing stolen artifacts. The Government also underscored ongoing efforts to enhance public awareness about the protection and preservation of India’s cultural property, highlighting the importance of collective responsibility in conserving the nation’s heritage.
