Ram Temple Donation Theft Case: SIT Uncovers Major Security and Oversight Failures

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the alleged theft of donation funds at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya has uncovered significant lapses in security, cash management, and oversight procedures.

According to the SIT's findings, the sorting, bundling, and counting of currency notes offered by devotees were carried out by employees hired through a private security agency contracted by the State Bank of India (SBI). The agency reportedly recruited local workers based on recommendations from individuals linked to the temple trust.

Investigators found that employees handling large amounts of cash were not subjected to proper entry and exit checks. Staff members allegedly worked in regular clothing instead of the prescribed uniforms, while surveillance measures were inadequately enforced.

The SIT also flagged serious shortcomings in CCTV monitoring. Preliminary findings suggest that some employees exploited surveillance blind spots or obstructed camera views while carrying out thefts, with footage reviews failing to detect suspicious activities in time.

The probe has revealed negligence at multiple stages of the donation-handling process, from transporting donation boxes within the temple premises to depositing funds in banks.

Meanwhile, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and an audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has been filed before the Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court. The petition argues that the matter involves public trust and the faith of millions of devotees.

Following its preliminary report, the SIT has directed all individuals under investigation not to leave Ayodhya without prior intimation. Authorities say the restriction is aimed at ensuring uninterrupted inquiry and facilitating further questioning as needed.

The SIT is currently preparing a detailed report while continuing its comprehensive investigation into the alleged financial irregularities.
