No Fuel Shortage, No Lockdown: Govt Reassures Amid West Asia Crisis

The Government of India has assured citizens that there is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG, and dismissed rumours of a possible lockdown despite rising tensions linked to the West Asia crisis and the ongoing Iran war.

During an inter-ministerial briefing, officials confirmed that fuel supply chains remain stable, with adequate stock levels maintained across the country. Citizens were urged to avoid panic buying and rely only on official information.

To shield consumers from surging global crude oil prices, the government announced a ₹10 per litre cut in excise duty on petrol and diesel. At the same time, export duties have been imposed on diesel and aviation turbine fuel to prioritise domestic availability. Refiners have also been directed to divert a significant share of fuel meant for exports to the local market.

Authorities stated that all refineries are operating at high capacity, while enforcement agencies are actively acting against hoarding and black marketing. Over 3,000 raids have been conducted, with more than 1,500 LPG cylinders seized.

To strengthen supply, LPG production has been increased by 40%, and alternative fuel adoption is being promoted through expanded PNG and CNG distribution. Essential sectors such as hospitality and food services are being given priority access.

Officials also addressed concerns around global shipping disruptions, particularly near the Strait of Hormuz, stating that India’s ports and logistics operations remain unaffected.

The government reiterated that the situation is under close monitoring, with a focus on energy security, price stability, and public reassurance during ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
