Is monsoon has arrived in the National capital, take these precautions
IMD says southwest monsoon has reached Mumbai and expanded into Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar, while Delhi remains in a pre-monsoon phase.
New Delhi, June 23: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced further advancement of the southwest monsoon across several parts of the country, including Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar and Maharashtra. While the monsoon continues its steady march northward, Delhi-NCR is expected to witness thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over the coming days, though the seasonal rains have not yet officially arrived in the national capital.
According to the IMD, the monsoon advanced on June 23 into the remaining parts of the central Arabian Sea, Mumbai and additional areas of Maharashtra, Telangana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar.
Despite cloudy skies and intermittent showers in recent days, Delhi remains in a transitional pre-monsoon phase. The weather department has forecast isolated to scattered rainfall across Delhi, Haryana, Chandigarh and Punjab between June 23 and June 26, with another spell likely around June 29.
The IMD has also issued an alert for isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, with speeds potentially reaching up to 60 kmph in some areas.
Meteorologists said conditions remain favorable for further advancement of the southwest monsoon into parts of the North Arabian Sea, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh over the next three to four days, bringing it closer to the Delhi-NCR region.
Meanwhile, Mumbai officially welcomed the southwest monsoon on Tuesday, ending a prolonged dry spell and bringing much-needed relief from above-normal temperatures experienced earlier this month.
The IMD stated that the monsoon's progress across central and eastern India is expected to enhance rainfall activity and provide relief from heat conditions in several regions over the coming days.
