Laxman, who currently heads the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE), is being considered for the position of Director of Cricket. If the move goes through, his influence could stretch well beyond player development and into the wider functioning of Indian cricket.
The proposed role could see Laxman act as a key link between Team India, selectors, coaching staff, the CoE and emerging talent. Identifying future stars, overseeing high-performance programmes and ensuring a smooth transition from domestic cricket to the international stage could all form part of his responsibilities.
There is, however, no official confirmation from the BCCI yet, and the exact structure of the proposed position remains unclear.
Why Laxman?
The former India No. 3 has already played a major behind-the-scenes role in developing India's next generation of cricketers. His experience at the CoE, combined with his international playing career and coaching exposure, makes him a strong candidate for a wider cricketing role.
Laxman has also stepped in as India's interim coach on several occasions. Most recently, he guided a young Indian side to a 3-0 T20I series win in Zimbabwe.
Interestingly, Laxman was considered for the India head coach job after Rahul Dravid's departure in 2024 but opted to continue leading the CoE.
If appointed as Director of Cricket, Laxman could become one of the most influential figures in Indian cricket, helping shape everything from talent scouting and player development to long-term team planning.
