Lok Sabha to Vote on Key Bills on Women’s Quota and Delimitation on April 17
The Speaker confirmed that the House will hold an extensive debate lasting approximately 15–18 hours before proceeding to the vote
In a significant legislative development, the Lok Sabha is set to vote on three crucial bills aimed at amending the women’s reservation framework and establishing a delimitation commission. The voting is scheduled for 4 PM on April 17, as announced by Om Birla.
The Speaker confirmed that the House will hold an extensive debate lasting approximately 15–18 hours before proceeding to the vote. Earlier, Kiren Rijiju had proposed a 12-hour discussion, while leaving the final decision on its extension to the Speaker’s discretion.
The three bills — The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill, 2026, The Delimitation Bill, 2026, and The Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026 — were formally introduced in the Lok Sabha by Union Ministers Arjun Ram Meghwal and Amit Shah.
These legislative proposals have triggered sharp reactions from opposition parties, who have criticized them as “anti-constitutional” and raised concerns over their implications.
According to the draft Constitution Amendment Bill, the total number of Lok Sabha seats is proposed to be increased from the current 543 to a maximum of 850. This move is intended to operationalize the women’s reservation law ahead of the 2029 general elections, following a nationwide delimitation exercise based on the 2011 Census.
The outcome of the voting is expected to have far-reaching implications for India’s electoral structure and representation framework.
