Kanpur Fuel Controversy: How Did 52 Litres of Petrol Fill a 45-Litre Car Tank?
Questions raised over petrol pump practices after officials find no fault in machines despite consumer complaint.
A petrol pump in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur has come under scrutiny after a car owner claimed that 52 litres of petrol were filled into a vehicle with an official tank capacity of 45 litres, sparking widespread debate and raising concerns over possible irregularities.
According to the complainant, the car already had around 2 to 3 litres of fuel before refuelling. Despite this, the petrol pump allegedly dispensed 52 litres, prompting suspicions about the accuracy of the fuel-dispensing system.
Following the complaint, a team from the district supply department visited the petrol station for inspection. District Supply Officer Rakesh Kumar stated that no technical fault was found in the fuel-dispensing machines during the investigation. He added that vehicle fuel tanks can sometimes hold a small amount beyond their listed capacity, as mentioned in vehicle manuals.
However, the explanation has failed to settle the controversy, with many questioning how a 45-litre tank could accommodate nearly 10 litres beyond its stated capacity.
The complainant also alleged delays in the investigation, claiming officials reached the petrol pump nearly a day and a half after the complaint was filed. This has led to allegations that the petrol station may have had enough time to address any potential irregularities before inspection.
Adding another twist, a manager at a Volkswagen service outlet reportedly stated that the specific vehicle model could not realistically hold 52 litres of fuel, even after accounting for reserve capacity, suggesting a maximum margin of only 4 to 5 litres.
With conflicting claims from officials, the complainant, and technical experts, the case continues to raise serious questions about fuel measurement accuracy at petrol pumps.
