Indian Railways Boosts Security: Over 52,000 Arrests Made, Strong Action Against Crime and Vandalism
RPF cracks down on theft and stone pelting; only three derailments linked to miscreants reported between 2021–2025
New Delhi | Indian Railways has significantly strengthened passenger safety and infrastructure security, with over 52,000 arrests made between 2021 and 2025 under the Railway Property (Unlawful Possession) Act, 1966.
According to official data, a total of 52,494 individuals were arrested during this period, with complaints filed against more than 50,000 offenders in courts. The Railway Protection Force (RPF), tasked with safeguarding railway assets, has intensified enforcement against theft, misappropriation, and related offences. The crackdown also targeted incidents of stone pelting, with 12,157 cases registered over five years. Out of these, 8,441 individuals were apprehended by the RPF and Government Railway Police (GRP), reflecting a focused effort to curb vandalism and ensure passenger safety.
Notably, only three derailments linked to miscreant activities were reported during this period, highlighting improved vigilance and preventive measures across the railway network.
To further enhance security, Indian Railways has implemented a multi-layered strategy, including regular coordination with state police and intelligence agencies, deployment of specialised intelligence units, and increased patrolling of vulnerable areas. Authorities have also introduced drone surveillance and solar-powered CCTV systems to monitor sensitive zones.
Additionally, awareness campaigns are being conducted to educate communities living near railway tracks about the risks and legal consequences of tampering with railway property.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring safe and secure train operations, with Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighting these measures in a recent Lok Sabha response.
