Haryana Youth, 23, Becomes UK’s Youngest Indian-Origin Mayor; Mother Also Elected Mayor
Mother-son duo from Haryana scripts history in the UK, highlighting the growing contribution of Indian-origin leaders in British public life.
In a proud moment for an Indian-origin family from Haryana, 23-year-old Tushar Kumar and his mother, Parveen Rani, have both been elected mayors in the United Kingdom, marking a remarkable achievement for the family.
Tushar has made history by becoming the youngest Indian-origin mayor in the UK after taking charge as Mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council on May 13. Just a week later, on May 20, his mother, Parveen Rani, was elected as the first Indian-origin Mayor of Hertsmere Borough Council.
Originally from Rohna village in Haryana’s Sonipat district, the family had lived in Rohtak before relocating to the UK in 2013. Tushar’s father, businessman Sunil Dahiya, described the achievement as a matter of immense pride for the family and the Indian community.
According to Dahiya, both Tushar and Parveen have long been involved in community service. Tushar began volunteering at a young age and entered public service early, becoming a councillor at just 20 while studying in London. He later served as deputy mayor before assuming the top civic role.
A graduate of King’s College London, Tushar is set to begin his Master’s degree later this year. His father said Tushar strongly believes that age should not limit young people from participating in public service and encourages youth to engage in community work early.
The family continues to maintain close ties with India, regularly visiting their hometown in Haryana. Beyond politics, Tushar and his mother have also contributed to cultural and educational initiatives, including teaching Hindi for free in the UK and supporting community organisations.
