Gigworkers go to offline for 5hours daily from today
Gig and Platform Service Workers Union demands higher per-kilometre pay as rising fuel costs hit delivery workers and drivers.
The Gig and Platform Service Workers Union (GIPSWU) has declared a protest against rising fuel prices, calling on gig workers across the country to temporarily shut down app-based services during the protest.
According to the union, delivery workers and drivers associated with food delivery, ride-hailing and other app-based platforms will keep their apps switched off from 12 PM to 5 PM on Friday to voice their concerns over increasing petrol and diesel prices.
The union says the continuous increase in fuel costs is severely affecting gig workers, especially delivery executives and drivers who rely on daily earnings to sustain themselves. With petrol and diesel becoming more expensive, workers claim their daily savings are shrinking steadily, making it increasingly difficult to manage expenses.
GIPSWU call for that platform companies introduce a minimum service rate of ₹20 per kilometre for gig workers to offset rising operational costs. The union argued that while fuel prices increase immediately, companies often fail to revise delivery charges or per-kilometre payouts, placing the financial burden entirely on workers.
“Whenever petrol and diesel prices rise, our expenses increase instantly, but earnings remain unchanged,” the union said, stressing that workers are being forced to absorb the additional costs without adequate compensation.
The protest is expected to impact delivery and transport services in various cities, potentially affecting food deliveries, courier services and app-based transport during the five-hour window.
The move highlights growing concerns within India’s gig economy, where workers have repeatedly demanded fair remuneration, fuel compensation and better working conditions amid rising living costs.
