Bulldozer Action Continues in Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh, Around 150 Structures Marked for Demolition

A large-scale bulldozer action is underway in Delhi’s Shalimar Bagh area as authorities have initiated the demolition of nearly 150 constructions to facilitate a major road widening project. The operation, which began overnight, is being carried out under tight security with the deployment of paramilitary forces and senior police officials on-site.

According to officials, the action was launched after the deadline for notices issued to occupants expired. Senior police officers, including DCPs and ACPs, along with officials from multiple districts, are closely monitoring the situation to ensure law and order.

The demolition drive has also impacted the office of former Aam Aadmi Party MLA Vandana Kumari, which reportedly falls within the affected zone.

Authorities stated that under the city’s master plan, the road in the Shalimar Bagh area was originally intended to be 30 meters wide. However, large-scale encroachments and illegal constructions along the roadside prevented the planned expansion, leading to severe traffic congestion and waterlogging during monsoon seasons.

Officials said the road widening project is necessary to improve traffic movement and address long-standing civic issues faced by local residents.

Meanwhile, a similar anti-encroachment drive was conducted in Gujarat’s Viramgam under the four-lane expansion project of the Viramgam–Surendranagar–Wadhwan State Highway-17. Around 4,000 square meters of land were reportedly cleared during the operation under heavy security arrangements.

A comparable case was also reported recently in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, where municipal authorities carried out a bulldozer action on May 23 as part of a road expansion project under the city’s master plan.
