New Delhi, March 12: The Ministry of Ayush will launch the 100-day countdown to the International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 with a grand event titled Yoga Mahotsav-2026 on March 13 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. The programme is being organised by the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) to promote the practice of yoga across the country in the lead-up to the global celebration on June 21.

As part of the countdown initiative, the Ministry of Ayush, along with its stakeholders, plans to organise yoga activities in 100 cities through 100 organisations, aiming to expand public outreach and encourage people to adopt yoga as part of their daily lifestyle. The event at Vigyan Bhawan will begin at 9:00 AM and is expected to witness the participation of several dignitaries, yoga experts, and enthusiasts.

The programme will be attended by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav, along with Ayush Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, President of S-VYASA Society Dr. H.R. Nagendra, and Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Ayush Monalisa Dash. The gathering will also include yoga gurus, yoga masters, Ayush experts, representatives from modern medicine and allied sciences, delegates, and yoga practitioners from across the country.

Speaking ahead of the event, Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav highlighted the global significance of yoga and recalled that the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014, following the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said the worldwide acceptance of yoga reflects the richness of India’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

Jadhav noted that the Ministry of Ayush serves as the nodal ministry for organising International Day of Yoga celebrations each year. The central event traditionally features a mass yoga demonstration led by the Prime Minister, drawing participation from thousands of people and symbolising the growing global appeal of yoga.

The 100-day countdown period plays a crucial role in spreading awareness about yoga and increasing participation across communities. During this phase, the ministry conducts outreach programmes, workshops, demonstrations, and awareness campaigns to connect with people nationwide.

For the 12th International Day of Yoga in 2026, the government plans to host events at 100 iconic locations across India, further strengthening the movement to promote yoga as a pathway to holistic health and well-being. With preparations already gaining momentum, the upcoming countdown programme is expected to inspire greater public involvement and encourage more people to embrace yoga in their daily lives.
