Taliban Bans Smartphones for Government Employees

The Taliban administration in Afghanistan has reportedly banned the use of smartphones by government employees, including judges and civil servants, in its latest move to tighten control over public institutions.

According to reports, the new directive prohibits all government personnel from using smartphones while on duty. Officials who violate the order could have their mobile phones confiscated or destroyed and may also face legal action under the country's regulations.

The Taliban administration has not publicly commented on the reports despite requests for clarification.

Government employees say the ban has already disrupted official work, as many administrative processes rely on smartphones, messaging applications such as WhatsApp, and email for communication and coordination.

Authorities in Panjshir province have reportedly announced the immediate implementation of the order across all government offices.

Critics argue that smartphones are among the few remaining tools available to Afghans for accessing education, communicating privately, documenting alleged abuses, and obtaining uncensored information. They say the latest restriction is part of the Taliban's broader effort to increase control over public life since returning to power in August 2021.

Since regaining control of Afghanistan, the Taliban has imposed sweeping restrictions on women, girls, media organisations, and civil society. Girls remain barred from secondary schools and universities, many women have been removed from their jobs, while journalists and activists have repeatedly reported intimidation, arbitrary detention, and censorship.
