Nepal tightens rules for entry of Indian vehicles with new online customs system

Nepal has introduced stricter regulations for the entry and stay of foreign vehicles, including those from India, after implementing an online customs clearance system known as the “Bhansar” system.

Under the new rules, private vehicles from India and other countries will now be allowed to remain in Nepal for a maximum of 30 days within a calendar year. Once the permitted duration ends, the vehicles must leave the country. Authorities have warned that vehicles overstaying beyond the allowed period could be seized.

The rule, however, will not apply to cargo and commercial transport vehicles involved in goods transportation.

Officials stated that tourists wishing to stay in Nepal for more than 30 days will have to replace their vehicles after the permitted period expires. While similar restrictions already existed at various border checkpoints, the absence of a centralized digital customs system earlier made it difficult for authorities to track how many times a vehicle entered Nepal and how long it stayed.

With the introduction of the online Bhansar system, customs offices can now digitally monitor the complete movement history of foreign vehicles entering and exiting the country.

Harihar Paudel, chief of the Bhairahawa Customs Office, said that Indian tourist vehicles would now strictly be permitted to stay in Nepal for only 30 days in a calendar year under the updated system. The move is expected to improve border monitoring, strengthen customs enforcement, and prevent misuse of temporary vehicle permits by foreign visitors.
