NASA’s Artemis II Mission Successfully Returns Astronauts to Earth with Pacific Splashdown

New Delhi | April 11, 2026 NASA has successfully completed its Artemis II mission, marking a historic milestone as astronauts returned safely to Earth after orbiting the Moon. The Orion spacecraft splashed down in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego, California, at 5:37 AM IST on April 11.

This mission is significant as it marks the first crewed lunar mission in 54 years, bringing humans back to the vicinity of the Moon since the Apollo era. All four astronauts onboard have been confirmed safe, with recovery teams quickly reaching the capsule.

During re-entry, the spacecraft underwent a critical and dangerous 13-minute phase involving extreme heat, communication blackout, and parachute deployment. Temperatures during descent reached up to 2,760°C, while a six-minute communication blackout temporarily cut off contact with mission control.

Prior to re-entry, the Orion crew module separated from its service module, exposing its heat shield to withstand intense atmospheric friction. The spacecraft then adjusted its trajectory for a precise re-entry angle.

The recovery operation is being carried out by the USS John P. Murtha, a US Navy ship equipped with medical facilities, helicopter support, and advanced communication systems. Astronauts will undergo immediate medical checks onboard.

US President Donald Trump congratulated the crew, calling the mission “flawless” and expressing pride in their achievement. He also hinted at future ambitions, stating that the next major goal would be sending humans to Mars.

The Artemis II mission represents a major step forward in deep space exploration, paving the way for future lunar landings and eventual human missions to Mars.
