PM Modi, Swedish PM Exchange Special Gifts Honouring Rabindranath Tagore’s Legacy
India and Sweden celebrate shared cultural ties through commemorative exchange marking Gurudev Tagore’s enduring influence
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sweden’s Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson exchanged special commemorative gifts celebrating the cultural and intellectual legacy of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore during a high-level meeting, highlighting the deep-rooted historical ties between India and Sweden.
The gift presented by Prime Minister Kristersson included a commemorative box containing replicas of two handwritten epigrams by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, accompanied by an explanatory note and a historic photograph of Tagore taken during his visit to Uppsala University in 1921. The original handwritten pieces were recently discovered in Sweden’s National Archives and were created during Tagore’s visits to Sweden in 1921 and 1926.
In return, Prime Minister Modi gifted Prime Minister Kristersson a collection of Rabindranath Tagore’s literary works, along with a specially handcrafted bag from Shantiniketan. The handcrafted piece featured artistic motifs personally chosen by Tagore to support and empower local artisans, reflecting his philosophy of integrating art into everyday life rather than limiting it to galleries and elite spaces.
The exchange of gifts served as a tribute to the enduring cultural connection between India and Sweden and celebrated Tagore’s lasting intellectual influence across borders.
Although Tagore was unable to travel to Sweden in 1913 to receive his Nobel Prize in Literature, he later visited the country in 1921, where he was welcomed by King Gustav V. The commemorative exchange also coincides with the centenary of Tagore’s historic 1926 visit to Sweden.
Officials described the symbolic gesture as a reflection of the shared cultural heritage and longstanding friendship between India and Sweden, further strengthening people-to-people ties between the two nations.
