Jaishankar Welcomes Sergey Lavrov to India, Highlights Strong India-Russia Strategic Partnership
External Affairs Minister says India and Russia share a common interest in strengthening multipolarity amid an uncertain global environment
New Delhi, May 13, 2026: External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar on Wednesday welcomed Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to India during the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting, emphasizing the growing strength of the India-Russia “Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership.”
In his opening remarks during the bilateral meeting, Jaishankar said the relationship between the two countries has witnessed “steady and sustained growth” in recent years, particularly in the economic and energy sectors.
The minister noted that political cooperation between India and Russia has become even more significant in the current uncertain and volatile global environment. He added that the two nations have also expanded collaboration in science and technology, while mobility of skilled professionals and better connectivity have emerged as key areas of mutual interest.
Jaishankar underlined the importance of regular high-level engagement, stating that the Annual Summit mechanism provides guidance for advancing bilateral ties. He said it is the responsibility of both Foreign Ministers to review and oversee the implementation of decisions taken by the leadership of the two countries.
“The complicated international situation also merits an open exchange of views, especially between two trusted partners,” Jaishankar said during the meeting.
He further stressed that India and Russia share a common interest in strengthening multipolarity and promoting diversification and derisking in global affairs.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting being hosted in India and comes amid evolving geopolitical and economic challenges worldwide.
