Johannesburg — The G20 Summit in Johannesburg has turned into a strategic triumph for India, as Prime Minister Narendra Modi leveraged the platform to deepen ties with African nations and push for greater inclusion of the Global South — all while the United States stayed on the sidelines.

Upon his arrival, Prime Minister Modi thanked South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for the warm hospitality and for hosting such a crucial gathering. The summit, held for the first time on African soil, carried both symbolism and substance — especially with the glaring absence of the U.S. delegation.

The Trump administration’s decision to boycott the summit came amid serious diplomatic friction. President Donald Trump accused South Africa of mistreating its white Afrikaner minority — allegations rejected by Pretoria — and attempted to prevent a full leaders’ declaration, which was ultimately ignored.

In closing the summit, President Ramaphosa refused to hand over the gavel to a low-level U.S. diplomat, reminding that “if you boycott an event or a process, you lose … the show will go on.”

With the U.S. largely absent, India found diplomatic space to lead. PM Modi reinforced India’s commitment to multilateralism, sustainable development, and South-South cooperation, earning strong support from African nations.

India pushed for greater recognition of African voices within the G20, renewing calls for institutional reform to grant the African Union a more permanent role. Under the IBSA framework (India–Brazil–South Africa), leaders reaffirmed cooperation on climate finance, digital growth, and reform of international institutions.

Analysts say that with the U.S. stepping back, India strengthened its role as a champion of a multipolar, inclusive G20.

The final declaration focused on debt sustainability, climate justice, and development finance — core priorities championed by India.

For India, the Johannesburg G20 Summit marks a historic moment of leadership, signalling its emergence as a central architect in shaping a more equitable global order.
