Elon Musk Flags India’s Falling Birth Rate, Says It Has Dropped Below Replacement Level

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk on Saturday claimed that India’s birth rate has fallen below the replacement level — the threshold at which a country’s population remains stable without growing or shrinking.

In a post on X, Musk wrote, “India’s birth rate has fallen below replacement level. Among more educated people, India’s birth rate fell below replacement many years ago.”

Musk referenced figures shared by media outlet AF Post, which reported that India’s fertility rate has slipped below replacement level for the first time in the country’s history. According to the data, India’s Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has dropped sharply from 2.3 to 1.9 over the past decade.

The report also pointed out that Delhi’s fertility rate currently stands at 1.2 — lower than that of Finland. AF Post cited a June 4 article by The Economist, titled “India’s Population Is About to Start Shrinking”, which explored the country’s changing demographic landscape.

The remarks have reignited conversations around India’s future population trends, workforce challenges, and the long-term social and economic implications of a declining birth rate.
