Ottawa, June 23, 2026: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has paid tribute to the victims of Air India Flight 182 on the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism, describing the tragedy as the deadliest terrorist attack in Canada's history.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Carney recalled that 41 years ago, the bombing of Air India Flight 182 claimed the lives of 329 innocent people, including 268 Canadians. He emphasized that the tragedy continues to serve as a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of terrorism and violent extremism.
The Prime Minister honored not only the victims of Flight 182 but also all those who have lost their lives to acts of terrorism around the world. He expressed solidarity with survivors, families, and communities who continue to carry the pain of these losses. Carney stated that the legacy of Air India Flight 182 demands both remembrance and vigilance. He highlighted Canada's ongoing efforts to combat violent extremism through strengthened legislation, enhanced national security measures, and initiatives aimed at disrupting terrorist financing and support networks.
The Canadian government, he noted, is also investing in community-based intervention programs and equipping security agencies with stronger tools to detect, prevent, and disrupt terrorist activities before they occur.
Reaffirming his government's commitment to public safety, Carney said protecting Canadians remains the government's foremost responsibility and will continue to be its central mission.
The statement comes as Canada observes the National Day of Remembrance for Victims of Terrorism, honoring those affected by acts of terror and reinforcing the country's resolve to safeguard its citizens.
