When Asha Bhosle and R. D. Burman Felt at Home in Kolkata
Concert organiser recalls the simplicity and warmth of two music legends during their Bengal visits
New Delhi | April 13, 2026 Legendary singer Asha Bhosle and composer R.D. Burman may have ruled Indian music, but in Kolkata, they lived like family. Concert organiser Tochon Ghosh fondly remembers their visits, marked by warmth, humility, and deep personal bonds.
Ghosh recalls that R.D. Burman, fondly called Panchamda, shared a close friendship with his brother-in-law. Whenever in Kolkata, Panchamda stayed at their Garcha home, where a room was always kept ready for him. He even relied on the family’s advice before accepting concert invitations.
Asha Bhosle, lovingly known as Ashadi, blended effortlessly into their household. She would go sari shopping at Gariahat with Ghosh’s sister and occasionally cook, especially enjoying Bengali-style machher jhol. Despite her stature, she embraced simple, homely moments.
Ghosh organised several shows for the duo, including a memorable “RD-Asha Night” in the 1970s featuring Zeenat Aman, celebrating the hit Dum Maro Dum. He also recalled an instance in Rampurhat where, due to lack of hotels, both artists stayed at the organiser’s home without hesitation.
Their bond extended beyond performances. Ghosh met Asha Bhosle during recordings in Mumbai, including sessions at Mehboob Studios with Bappi Lahiri. The last meeting was about eight years ago in Kolkata.
For Ghosh, they were not just legends but simple, affectionate individuals. As the nation remembers Asha Bhosle, these stories highlight the humanity behind the iconic voice.
