Legendary Singer Asha Bhosle Passes Away at 92
Padma Vibhushan awardee and one of India’s most iconic playback voices breathed her last in Mumbai; last rites to be held with full state honours
New Delhi | April 12, 2026 In a monumental loss to Indian music, legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle passed away at the age of 92 in Mumbai on Sunday. The news was confirmed by Maharashtra Cultural Minister Ashish Shelar.
She had been admitted to a private hospital a day earlier due to a chest infection and exhaustion, as informed by her granddaughter Zanai Bhosle. Her last rites will be performed on Monday at 4 PM at Shivaji Park with full state honours.
Born in 1933 into the renowned Mangeshkar family, Asha Bhosle began her singing career at just nine years old and recorded her first film song in 1943. By the 1950s, she had established herself as a distinctive and versatile voice in Hindi cinema.
Over the decades, she recorded more than 12,000 songs in multiple Indian languages, becoming one of the most celebrated playback singers in the history of Indian music.
Her timeless hits include Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar, In Aankhon Ki Masti, Dil Cheez Kya Hai, Piya Tu Ab To Aaja, and Zara Sa Jhoom Loon Main, among many others.
Asha Bhosle’s voice transcended generations, lending life to iconic actresses from Meena Kumari and Madhubala to Kajol and Urmila Matondkar, as well as several stars in South Indian cinema.
Her passing marks the end of an era, leaving behind a rich musical legacy that will continue to resonate for generations.
