LPG Shipment Heads to India Amid Middle East Tensions, Relief for Domestic Supply

Two Indian vessels carrying nearly 92,700 tonnes of LPG from the Gulf region are heading to India, enough to supply around 3.5 million domestic cylinders and support the country’s cooking gas needs.

Amid the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, India has received a significant relief as an LPG-loaded Indian vessel, Shivalik, is on its way to Mundra Port in Gujarat. The ship is transporting a large quantity of cooking gas from the Gulf region to support India’s energy needs.

According to government sources, two Indian vessels — Shivalik and Nanda Devi — are together carrying around 92,700 tonnes of LPG to the country. One of the ships will unload its cargo at Mundra Port.

Capacity Details: The vessel has an estimated capacity of about 82,000 cubic meters of LPG, and each ship can transport nearly 50,000 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas.

Potential Domestic Supply

1 household LPG cylinder: 14.2 kg 50,000 tonnes LPG: approximately 50 million kg

This amount of LPG can fill nearly 3.5 million household cylinders.

Impact on Households Around 3.5 million cylinders could meet the monthly cooking gas demand of roughly 2–2.5 million families.

Officials say that during the current geopolitical tensions, this shipment is expected to play an important role in ensuring stability in India’s domestic LPG supply chain.
