LPG Prices Surge Again Amid Global Tensions
Commercial cylinders become costlier; domestic rates remain unchanged
New Delhi,April 2, 2026: LPG prices have risen sharply across India, with commercial cylinders witnessing a significant hike from April 1. The increase comes amid escalating tensions in West Asia, which have disrupted global energy supplies and pushed up crude oil prices.
The price of a 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder has increased by nearly ₹200 in major cities. In Kolkata, it now costs ₹2,208.50, marking one of the steepest hikes among metros. This is the second consecutive increase since the Iran conflict began on March 28, following a ₹144.5 hike in March.
However, there is some relief for households as domestic LPG cylinder prices (14.2 kg) remain unchanged this month. In Kolkata, the domestic cylinder continues to cost ₹939.00. Last month, domestic prices were already raised by ₹60, adding pressure on household budgets.
The surge in LPG prices is largely attributed to rising global oil prices, which have reportedly jumped by nearly 50% due to supply disruptions, especially around key transit routes like the Strait of Hormuz. Since India depends heavily on fuel imports, international price fluctuations directly impact domestic rates.
In addition to LPG, Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices have also increased, indicating a broader rise in fuel costs.
The hike is expected to hit businesses such as restaurants, hotels, and street vendors the hardest, as they rely on commercial cylinders. Increased operational costs may lead to higher food prices, affecting consumers.
With geopolitical tensions still ongoing, experts warn that fuel prices may remain volatile, and further hikes cannot be ruled out in the near future.
