Government Boosts Sale of 5-kg LPG Cylinders, Assures No Fuel Shortage
Centre urges citizens to avoid panic buying, expands supply and alternative fuel options
The Government of India has intensified the sale and distribution of smaller 5-kg LPG cylinders to meet rising demand, while assuring citizens that there is no shortage of fuel across the country.
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, around 6.6 lakh 5-kg LPG cylinders have been sold since March 23, following an increase in supply. These smaller cylinders are available over the counter at LPG distributorships upon showing valid identification, making them more accessible to consumers.
Unlike the commonly used subsidised 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinders, the 5-kg variants are sold at market rates and do not require address proof, allowing easier and quicker purchase from nearby distributors.
The government clarified that there are currently no reports of fuel shortages. On April 4 alone, over 51 lakh domestic LPG cylinders were delivered, with nearly 95 percent of bookings made through online platforms. Authorities have urged citizens to rely on digital booking systems and avoid unnecessary visits to LPG outlets.
In addition to boosting LPG supply, the government is taking broader measures to ensure uninterrupted fuel availability. These include safeguarding maritime logistics, maintaining refinery operations at high capacity, and increasing domestic LPG production.
To reduce pressure on LPG demand, the government is also promoting alternative cooking solutions such as piped natural gas (PNG), electric cooktops, and induction systems. So far, around 3.6 lakh households have been connected to PNG, with nearly 3.9 lakh new registrations recorded since March.
Strict monitoring is also underway to prevent hoarding and black marketing. Authorities have seized over 50,000 LPG cylinders, issued more than 1,400 notices, and suspended 36 distributorships for violations. States and Union Territories have been directed to conduct daily inspections and counter misinformation through regular advisories.
The government has reiterated that petrol, diesel, and LPG supplies remain stable, urging the public to stay calm and avoid panic-driven purchases.
