Excise Duty Cut May Not Bring Immediate Relief in Petrol, Diesel Prices
OMCs likely to absorb benefits amid rising global crude oil prices
The government’s recent decision to cut excise duty by ₹10 per litre on petrol and diesel is unlikely to result in an immediate drop in fuel prices for consumers, as oil marketing companies (OMCs) are expected to offset their mounting losses.
The Centre has reduced excise duty on petrol from ₹13 to ₹3 per litre, while diesel duty has been brought down to zero. Although such cuts typically lead to lower retail prices, the current global oil scenario has complicated the impact.
International crude oil prices have surged significantly, with Brent crude crossing $100 per barrel amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia and disruptions in key supply routes like the Strait of Hormuz. This sharp increase has put pressure on OMCs, which are reportedly facing losses of nearly ₹48 per litre.
As a result, companies are unlikely to pass on the full benefit of the tax reduction to consumers immediately. Instead, they may use the relief to recover previous losses and stabilize their margins.
Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted that global fuel prices have risen sharply across regions, and the government opted to reduce taxes to shield Indian consumers from the full impact. However, the benefit at the retail level may take time to materialize.
Fuel prices across major cities have remained unchanged for now. Experts suggest that any reduction in pump prices will depend on how global crude prices move in the coming weeks.
In essence, while the government has eased its tax burden, consumers may have to wait longer to see actual relief at fuel stations.
