Centre Pushes Connectivity-Led Growth: Focus on Cachar Region and Surat Metro Expansion

New Delhi — In a significant boost to infrastructure-driven development, the government has highlighted the transformative potential of enhanced connectivity projects in Assam’s Cachar district and Gujarat’s Surat city, underlining their role in accelerating regional economic growth.

Improved air connectivity in Cachar district and surrounding areas is expected to act as a catalyst for broader socio-economic development. Policymakers believe that better flight access will not only stimulate trade, tourism, and business activity but also create multiplier effects across key sectors. Ancillary industries such as roads, logistics, hospitality, and urban infrastructure are likely to benefit, contributing to sustained regional expansion and employment generation.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has proposed an important extension of Surat Metro’s Corridor II (Phase I) from Saroli to the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (HSR) corridor in Gujarat. The 4.4-kilometre elevated stretch will include three new stations, along with provisions for two future stations, aimed at strengthening Surat’s urban mobility framework.

The extension is strategically designed to serve as a dedicated feeder network to the Mumbai–Ahmedabad HSR corridor, enabling seamless last-mile connectivity for passengers. Authorities emphasise that integrated station planning — including direct metro-to-HSR linkages, feeder bus systems, and non-motorised transport facilities — will significantly enhance commuter convenience.

Urban transport experts note that such multimodal integration improves not just passenger experience but also the overall efficiency and sustainability of transport ecosystems. The project is expected to reduce travel friction, encourage public transport usage, and support Surat’s long-term urban growth.

Together, these initiatives underscore the government’s continued emphasis on connectivity as a cornerstone of balanced regional development and economic modernisation.
