A large piece of debris from a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket has reportedly crashed into the Moon after drifting through space for nearly a year. Although the impact is yet to be officially confirmed, scientists believe the rocket stage struck the lunar surface at an estimated speed of 8,700 km/h, likely creating a new crater.

The object, roughly the size of a school bus and weighing around four metric tonnes, was originally part of a Falcon 9 mission that launched two lunar landers. Space-tracking experts had predicted the collision after the rocket stage veered off its intended trajectory and entered an uncontrolled orbit.

Scientists had expected the impact to kick up a cloud of lunar dust, which may have briefly reflected sunlight. However, the event was not expected to be visible to the naked eye from Earth.

The estimated impact site is near Einstein Crater on the Moon's western region, close to the boundary between its near and far sides. According to astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell, the rocket likely shattered into numerous small fragments upon impact.

The incident has renewed concerns about the growing amount of space debris accumulating around the Moon as more countries and private companies accelerate lunar exploration. In 2022, a Chinese rocket stage also unintentionally crashed into the Moon, highlighting the increasing challenge of managing abandoned spacecraft.

SpaceX representative Juliana Scheiman said the company is working with NASA to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future. She explained that the collision was unintentional and resulted from a combination of solar activity and gravitational forces that altered the rocket's trajectory.

NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) is expected to pass over the impact site in the coming days. Scientists hope the spacecraft will capture images of the newly formed crater, providing the first visual confirmation of the collision.
