No More Long Queues at Toll Plazas! Delhi Launches Barrier-Less Toll Collection System
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari will inaugurate Delhi’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll system at the Mundka–Bakkarwala toll plaza on Urban Extension Road-II.
Delhi commuters are set to witness a major change in highway travel as the capital introduces its first-ever barrier-less toll collection system from today. The new Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system aims to eliminate long vehicle queues, reduce traffic congestion, and make toll payments completely seamless.
Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari will officially launch the advanced tolling system at the Mundka–Bakkarwala toll plaza located on Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). The initiative is being seen as a significant step toward modernising India’s highway infrastructure.
Under the MLFF system, vehicles will no longer need to stop at toll plazas. Unlike traditional toll booths that require barriers and manual slowing down, the new system allows vehicles to pass through without interruption while toll charges are automatically deducted.
The technology works through cameras and sensors installed at the toll plaza. As a vehicle moves through the lane, cameras scan the FASTag affixed to the vehicle’s windshield and automatically deduct the toll amount from the linked account. Since barriers remain open at all times, traffic flow remains uninterrupted.
Officials believe the new system will greatly reduce congestion at toll plazas, especially during peak traffic hours. The barrier-less setup is also expected to save fuel, reduce travel time, and lower vehicle emissions caused by long idling queues.
The MLFF system was recently tested in Surat and is now being rolled out in Delhi as part of a broader plan to modernise toll collection across the country. Authorities say similar systems could soon be introduced at other toll plazas on national highways.
Once implemented nationwide, the technology is expected to transform highway travel by making toll payments faster, smarter, and completely contactless.
