DRDO Develops Kaveri 2.0 Engine to Boost Tejas’ Indigenous Capability
New Engine Targets Up to 100 kN Thrust and Could Reduce Dependence on US-Made GE F404 Engines
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is advancing the development of an upgraded Kaveri 2.0 jet engine, aimed at reducing India’s dependence on foreign powerplants for fighter aircraft. Developed by DRDO’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), the engine is being redesigned with higher thrust and lower weight.
Kaveri 2.0 is reportedly targeting 55–60 kN of dry thrust and 90–100 kN with afterburner, potentially making it suitable for platforms such as the Tejas fighter jet. The initiative gains importance amid delays in the supply of American GE F404 engines, which have affected the production schedule of Tejas Mk1A aircraft.
The original Kaveri programme began decades ago but faced challenges related to thrust and weight, preventing its integration with the Tejas. The new version incorporates an advanced high-pressure compressor, titanium-alloy blisks and single-crystal turbine blades to improve efficiency and performance.
DRDO is also working to significantly reduce the engine’s weight. The original Kaveri reportedly weighed around 1,235 kg, while Kaveri 2.0 is being targeted at below 1,100 kg, with a future goal of bringing it closer to 1,000 kg. A FADEC digital control system is also planned.
The dry version of the engine could potentially power the Ghatak unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV), while future applications may include other Indian aircraft.
The programme is expected to undergo ground, high-altitude and flight testing in phases. If successful, Kaveri 2.0 could strengthen India’s aerospace-engine capabilities, reduce foreign dependence and support the country’s broader Atmanirbhar Bharat defence objectives.
