Census 2027 Goes Digital: 8.2 Million Families Submit Data Online, Door-to-Door Survey Begins

India has officially launched its first-ever digital census, marking a major shift in how population data is collected. Under Census 2027, around 8.2 million families have already completed self-enumeration by submitting their details online, reflecting strong public participation in the initial phase.

Following the completion of the 15-day online self-enumeration window, the next phase has now begun, with field surveys underway in several states. These include Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. Trained enumerators are visiting households to gather information directly, and this process is expected to continue until May 30, 2026.

During the door-to-door survey, officials will ask approximately 33 questions covering key aspects such as household facilities, ownership details, and information about family members including names, gender, and total number of occupants. The aim is to create a comprehensive and accurate database.

Other regions, including Delhi municipal areas, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, and Jharkhand, are still offering the self-enumeration option until May 15. Field surveys in these areas will begin from May 16. In Bihar, the online phase has ended, and door-to-door data collection starts from May 2, while Telangana and Punjab continue with their scheduled timelines.

A major highlight of this census is the use of technology. Enumerators are collecting data through a dedicated mobile application, ensuring faster, more efficient, and error-free processing.

Overall, Census 2027 represents a significant modernization effort, combining digital participation with on-ground verification to build a reliable foundation for future population data.
