West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026: Repolling Underway at 15 Booths, TMC Prepares for Counting
Fresh voting begins in South 24 Parganas as Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee plan strategy meeting ahead of results
Repolling is currently underway in 15 polling booths across two constituencies in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, following orders from the Election Commission of India over alleged irregularities during earlier voting. The affected booths include 11 in Magrahat Paschim and four in Diamond Harbour.
Voting began at 7 a.m. and will continue until 6 p.m., with security tightened to ensure a fair process. Early turnout figures indicate steady participation, with Magrahat Paschim recording 16.68% voter turnout and Diamond Harbour 15.83% by 9 a.m. Long queues of voters have been reported as residents return to cast their ballots again.
Meanwhile, political activity has intensified ahead of the vote counting scheduled for May 4. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee, a senior leader of the Trinamool Congress, are set to hold a virtual meeting with counting agents from 291 constituencies. The session aims to brief party representatives on their responsibilities and ensure smooth counting procedures.
In a parallel development, the Supreme Court of India has disposed of a petition filed by the Trinamool Congress concerning the deployment of central staff for vote counting supervision.
The elections have seen heightened political tension, with allegations and counter-allegations between major parties. However, officials have assured that strict security arrangements, including CCTV monitoring, are in place to prevent any malpractice during counting.
The outcome of these elections is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the political landscape of West Bengal.
