Zverev Cruises Into Halle Quarter-finals as Shelton and Fritz Set Up Blockbuster Rematch

Alexander Zverev continued his impressive transition from clay to grass as he booked his place in the quarter-finals of the Terra Wortmann Open with a straight-sets victory over fellow German Yannick Hanfmann on Thursday.

The World No. 3, who recently captured his maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros, defeated Hanfmann 6-3, 7-6(4) in a high-quality contest lasting 81 minutes. Zverev was dominant behind his serve, dropping just three points on his first delivery and not facing a single break point throughout the match.

“I thought it was a very good grass-court match,” Zverev said after the win. “Both of us served extremely well, and I made the most of the opportunities I had.”

The top seed is now aiming for his first Halle title after finishing runner-up in consecutive editions in 2016 and 2017. He will next face Belgian qualifier Raphael Collignon, who fought back from a set down to defeat Italy’s Mattia Bellucci 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The impressive run guarantees Collignon a place inside the ATP Top 50 for the first time in his career.

Meanwhile, tennis fans are set for another exciting chapter in the growing rivalry between Americans Ben Shelton and Taylor Fritz.

Fritz secured his quarter-final berth with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 victory over Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan, winning an astonishing 94 percent of points behind his first serve.

Shelton followed with a hard-fought 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 win against fellow American Ethan Quinn. Despite letting the second set slip away, the 23-year-old responded strongly in the decider to extend his winning streak to six matches and reach his seventh quarter-final of the season.

The upcoming showdown comes less than a week after Shelton defeated Fritz in the Stuttgart Open final to claim his third title of the year. Shelton currently leads their head-to-head record 3-1 and has won several closely contested battles against his compatriot.

“It’s a different court, but the same challenge,” Shelton said ahead of the clash. “We’ve built a really good rivalry with a lot of tight matches, and I’m excited to play him again.”

With Zverev chasing a first Halle crown and Shelton and Fritz renewing one of the ATP Tour’s most exciting rivalries, the quarter-finals promise plenty of drama on the German grass courts.
