IPL 2027: Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans Comeback Hits a Roadblock Over Captaincy
Hardik reportedly wanted to return to Gujarat Titans only if he was reinstated as captain, but the franchise was unwilling to remove Shubman Gill from the leadership role.
Hardik Pandya’s future ahead of IPL 2027 has taken another dramatic turn. The Mumbai Indians all-rounder reportedly explored a return to his former franchise, Gujarat Titans, but the potential blockbuster move has stalled over one crucial issue — captaincy.
According to reports, Hardik was open to returning to Gujarat Titans, the team he led to the IPL title in their debut season in 2022. However, his return reportedly came with a major condition: he wanted to reclaim the captaincy.
That demand became the sticking point in negotiations. Gujarat Titans are understood to be unwilling to make such a change, with Shubman Gill firmly established as the team's captain. Gill took over the leadership role after Hardik was traded to Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024.
The situation has inevitably raised questions about the equation between Hardik and Gill. Hardik had led Gujarat for two seasons, while Gill subsequently stepped into the role and has since become one of the central figures in the franchise.
For Gujarat, bringing Hardik back could have offered familiarity and experience, but handing him the captaincy would mean making a significant change to a leadership structure that has already been built around Gill.
Reports therefore suggest that the proposed return has effectively hit a roadblock because neither side was willing to compromise on the captaincy issue.
Meanwhile, Hardik's IPL 2027 future remains uncertain. With reports also linking him to other franchises, the coming trade window could determine where the star all-rounder plays — and whether he gets the leadership role he appears to be seeking.
For now, however, a reunion with Gujarat Titans looks unlikely unless the captaincy equation changes.
