India Maintains Ban on Bilateral Sports Ties With Pakistan, Confirms Sports Ministry.
Indian teams will not travel to Pakistan for bilateral events, while Pakistani teams will also not be allowed to play bilateral series in India
The Government of India has decided to continue the ban on bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports confirmed in a fresh circular issued on Wednesday. The ministry clarified that Indian teams will not participate in any bilateral competition hosted in Pakistan, and Pakistani teams will also not be permitted to play bilateral series in India.
However, the restriction will not apply to multinational or international tournaments involving multiple countries. This means India and Pakistan can still compete against each other in global events such as ICC tournaments, the Olympics, Asian Games, or other international championships.
The policy was first introduced in August 2025 following the controversy surrounding India’s participation in the Asia Cup. The move came after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of 26 people, leading to heightened tensions between the two nations.
The Sports Ministry stated that India will continue to follow the guidelines of international sporting bodies while prioritizing the interests and safety of Indian athletes. The decision is also being viewed in the context of India’s ambitions to host major global sporting events, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympic Games.
As part of its broader sports development strategy, the government also announced steps to simplify visa procedures for athletes, coaches, technical staff, and officials from international sports organizations. Senior office-bearers of global sports bodies may receive priority-based multi-entry visas valid for up to five years.
Meanwhile, the Sports Ministry has shifted its office from Shastri Bhavan to a new complex located in Netaji Nagar, New Delhi.
