Gambhir Urges Focus On Trophies After India’s T20 World Cup Triumph

Following India’s dominant victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup final, head coach Gautam Gambhir reiterated his long-standing belief that team achievements should always take precedence over individual milestones.

India secured their third T20 World Cup title after defeating the New Zealand national cricket team by 96 runs in Ahmedabad on Sunday. The win capped a near-perfect performance from the Indian side and marked a significant moment for the team under Gambhir’s leadership.

After the match, Gambhir stated that throughout his tenure as head coach, the team will prioritise trophies over individual records. Speaking alongside captain Suryakumar Yadav, he explained that their shared philosophy focuses on collective success rather than personal achievements.

Gambhir also urged the cricket media to celebrate championships instead of individual milestones such as centuries or run tallies. According to him, the primary objective in any team sport should be winning titles rather than highlighting personal statistics.

Without naming anyone directly, Gambhir referred to how certain contributions in major finals often go unnoticed. He has previously pointed out that his key innings—97 runs in the 2011 World Cup final and 75 in the 2007 T20 World Cup final—were overshadowed by iconic moments involving former captain MS Dhoni.

Highlighting the importance of playing for the team, Gambhir praised Sanju Samson for his performances in the knockout stages, calling them a strong example of selfless team cricket.
