England Pacer John Turner Retires at 25 Due to Persistent Back Injury
England fast bowler John Turner has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of just 25, bringing an early end to a promising career that was cut short by recurring injuries.
Turner, who made his international debut for England during the team's tour of the West Indies at the end of 2024, represented his country in two One-Day Internationals and two T20 Internationals, claiming three wickets. Despite showing promise at the highest level, persistent fitness issues prevented him from building on his early success.
The right-arm pacer has not played a competitive match since June last year after suffering a stress fracture in his back. Repeated injury setbacks eventually forced him to make the difficult decision to step away from the game.
Born in Johannesburg, Turner still had two years remaining on his Hampshire contract. Although he impressed in domestic cricket, injuries prevented him from securing a regular place in Hampshire's County Championship side, where he featured in only seven first-class matches. At the start of 2025, he joined Lancashire on loan and played three matches before another injury ruled him out once again.
In an emotional statement, Turner said that representing Hampshire and England had been a lifelong dream and one of the greatest achievements of his career. He described his retirement as one of the toughest decisions he has ever had to make, adding that spending more than a year on the sidelines with a back stress fracture had forced him to think seriously about his future, both in and beyond cricket.
Turner said he ultimately felt it was the right time to move on and embrace a new chapter in his life. His retirement follows that of 40-year-old England cricketer Joe Denly, who also recently announced the end of his professional career.
