Boxer Narender Berwal Shares Amusing India-Pakistan Fight Story With PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met members of India’s medal-winning contingent from the 2026 Commonwealth Games at his residence in New Delhi. During the interaction, heavyweight boxer Narender Berwal shared an amusing anecdote from his past encounter with a Pakistani boxer.

Berwal recalled his bout at the 2015 World Military Games, where he faced a boxer from Pakistan. Before the contest, he said, he had been specifically told by the Indian Army to ensure that he did not lose the fight.

According to Berwal, he won the first round 4-1 and the second 3-2. However, the contest also left both fighters injured after their heads collided. Following the bout, both boxers had to visit a hospital for stitches.

The most memorable moment came after the fight. Berwal said the Pakistani boxer approached him and asked, “Brother, can I say something?” He then pointed out that Berwal’s name was Narender, his Indian Army coach was also named Narender Rana, and India’s Prime Minister was Narendra Modi.

The Pakistani boxer reportedly joked that he had developed a dislike for the name “Narender” after the encounter.

Berwal narrated the incident to PM Modi during their recent meeting, leaving the Prime Minister and others amused.

A member of the Indian Army, Berwal competes in the heavyweight category and has represented India at major international competitions. His interaction with PM Modi offered a lighter moment during the meeting, highlighting the camaraderie and memorable experiences that often accompany sporting rivalries.
