Union Minister George Kurian Resigns from Modi Government After Rajya Sabha Term Ends
President Droupadi Murmu accepts resignation of Minister of State George Kurian as BJP declines to renominate him to the Rajya Sabha.
New Delhi, June 23, 2026: George Kurian, the Minister of State for Minority Affairs in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government, has resigned from the Union Council of Ministers following the completion of his Rajya Sabha tenure. President Droupadi Murmu has accepted his resignation with immediate effect.
Kurian’s term as a Rajya Sabha member ended on June 21. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) did not nominate him for another term during the recent Rajya Sabha elections, prompting his departure from the Union Cabinet.
Acting on the advice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Murmu formally accepted Kurian’s resignation. In addition to handling the Minority Affairs portfolio, Kurian also served as Minister of State in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
A native of Kerala’s Kottayam district, Kurian was the only Christian representative in the Modi government. His exit marks the end of a brief but significant ministerial stint that highlighted the BJP’s outreach to minority communities.
Born in 1960, Kurian is a Supreme Court lawyer and has been associated with the BJP since its formation in 1980. Before joining the Union Cabinet, he served as the Vice-Chairman of the National Commission for Minorities.
Another Union Minister, Ravneet Singh Bittu, also completed his Rajya Sabha term recently. However, while Bittu continues in office for now, Kurian stepped down shortly after the end of his parliamentary tenure. Kurian’s resignation comes amid ongoing political discussions over the BJP’s strategy for representation in the Upper House and within the Union Council of Ministers.
